Well-being

Life satisfaction and happiness

The happiness score (Life Evaluation) is a national average of responses where people rate their current life from 0 (worst possible) to 10 (best possible). Scores shown are three-year averages.

Data from the World Happiness Report, based on the Gallup World Poll.

What underlies the score

The World Happiness Report uses statistical analysis to estimate how much of each country’s score is associated with six factors plus a baseline (“Dystopia + residual”). The bars below decompose the latest score for each country.

Mental health

The share of Canadians aged 12 and over rating their own mental health very good or excellent has fallen from 72% in 2015 to 55% in 2022. This is one of the clearest trends in the national health survey. Unlike the charts above, this is a Canada-only series (Canadian Community Health Survey). Self-rated mental health isn’t collected on a comparable basis across the peer group.

Safety

Safety is a basic component of well-being. For the long-run Crime Severity Index and homicide rate, the specific kinds of crime people actually experience and how often they get solved, and how metropolitan areas and Toronto neighbourhoods compare, see Crime & Safety.
